BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CROSS NEWS
In line with the decision of the church council at the end of Vatican II where

they looked at Media as “gift of God” which if used properly in accordance
with his providential design will unite Men and even help us co-operate with
his salvific mission. Also coupled with the catholic Bishop’s conference of
Nigeria (1983) which clearly encourages the use of modern means of
communication in the contemporary era of evangelization. Thus, to this
Ogunbi confirms:
…every diocese has been expected to establish an office of social communic-
ation part of whose function is to explore ways of utilizing media in
promoting evangelization.1

This however, led to the establishment of the department of social commun-
ication in Kaduna Archdiocese. This body conceived and gave birth
to “The Cross News”. The Cross News is a monthly publication of
the Archdiocese of Kaduna established June 1990. it has its primary objective
as evangelization and fostering of education, information disseminating both
secular and religious through objective reporting of events within and around
the church. Since its inception, it has been managed by Rev. Fr. Philip Gaiya,
Rev. Fr. Peter Yakubu Ali, Rev. Fr. Anthony Zakka, Rev. Fr. Anthony Okelue
and currently it is being managed by the Ag. editor-in-chief, Mr. Maurice
Eluchie. But to facilitate its production, it has reporters from all the parishes
within the diocese mainly from the Social Communication Department. From
its first production of 1,000 copies now it is publishing more than 5,000 copies
in each edition which is circulated around the Archdiocese and beyond.
