MANDATORY COLLECTIONS EXPLAINED
Mandatory collections are compulsory offerings of the faithful taken up for
various important and specific projects. Some of these are universal in scope;
some are national while others are diocesan or local. The faithful in the
Archdiocese should be sensitized to ensure that they contribute generously
towards the unity of purpose of the universal church.
1. Laity Council: (4th Sunday of Lent) This collection is nationwide. It is
meant to sponsor all laity activities and projects. Dioceses are levied according
to their strength.
2. Lenten Collection: (3rd Sunday of the Year) This is a national/local
collection usually taken during lent for charitable causes of the Archdiocese as
well as for developing rural areas who lack essential amenities in order to bring
succour to the poor.
3. Archbishop's Day: (Cathedraticum) This is an Archdiocesan affair to
demonstrate appreciation to the Archbishop who is the chief shepherd. He
uses the gifts mostly to help those in need.
4. Holy Land (Good Friday) This money collected are centrally coordinated
to maintain the holy places and personnel in the Holy Land. The holy places
need to be maintained as places of pilgrimage.
5. Youth Collection (Palm Sunday) The money collected is used for youth
activities and their empowerment. Such monies are also used for training them
to acquire a vocation, grow in faith and sponsor their conferences.
6. Peter the Apostle: This is a universal collection which goes to the Holy
See for the development of seminaries, formation houses and the maintenance
of minor and major seminaries in developing countries.
7. Vocation Collections (4th Sunday of Easter) This collection is taken for
the growth and development of vocations i.e. for the training of seminarians
and novices (Good Shepherd Sunday).
8. Communication Collections (Ascension) This collection is taken to
exploit and employ all aspects of the media for the purpose of preaching the
gospel.
9. Peter's Pence Collection: (June) This is a universal collection taken up
in solidarity with the Pope, the Vicar of Christ and successor of Peter to be
used at the Pope's discretion.
10. Catholic Biblical Apostolate: (Bible Week/Sept) This collection is
taken to promote and appreciate the bible and to foster a more committed
reading culture of the word. It aims at making the bible more accessible and
affordable to all Catholics.
11. Catechetical Week: (November) During this week, attention is given
to the task of teaching the faith and the agents of that task. A collection is
taken to enhance the task of primary evangelization which is vital to the
foundation of the church.
12. Mission Sunday Collection (October) The collection is taken to aid
missionary endeavours and efforts of the church. It is basically to help in the
task of evangelization. The entire collection taken up in parishes is sent to
Rome world wide for this cause.
13. World Sick/AIDS Day Collection (Ash Wednesday) On this day,
prayers are offered for the sick. The faithful are sensitized on the dangers of
HIV/AIDS. Special collections are made in all churches to help those who cannot
afford medical treatment.
14. CIWA/VUNA Collection: The Catholic Institute of West Africa and
Veritas University of Nigeria, Abuja belong to the church in West Africa. It is
founded by the church in West Africa and Nigeria. This collection is channelled
in this direction.
15. Holy Childhood Collection (Epiphany): This collection is taken up
towards the missionary animation of children in the world. It IS a forum for
the unity of children the world over to help in the upliftment of fellow children.
Children should be taught and encouraged to give money or material to support
children in other parts of the world.
16. Lenten Box Collection (9th April): The Lenten boxes are collected as
from Holy Thursday. These are savings made during the Lenten season. It is
used to assist the poor.
17. CBCN/CSN: This is a national collection made for the activities of the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria.
18. Diocesan PMAS: This collection is taken up for the logistics and other
organizational aspects of PMAS.
