Brief History
The Cathedral started with a humble beginning. The visiting missionaries
from Asaba and Lokoja celebrated the first mass in a Catholic compound
along Lagos Street known today as Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Kaduna. In 1917,
the Church and the fathers' house were built. The present Church is the
third built so far on the compound in 1934 under the supervision of
Monsignor Hughes who later became the bishop of Ondo/Ilorin diocese.

St. Joseph became a Cathedral when the Prefecture Apostolic of Kaduna
was raised to the stand of a diocese in 1953. It later became an Archdiocesan
Cathedral in 1953 and since then there have been series of constructions and
expansions within the compound under different administrators such as
Frs. Denis Minihane, John Brown, Joseph Bagobiri (now bishop of Kafanchan),
Joseph Biliyok, Late Martin Debaleh, Gabriel Veron Enuagha Esq.,
and now Very Rev. Fr. Bulus Karis Lukas.
